Ethereum rollups, including Optimism and Arbitrum, are layer two scalability solutions that are gaining traction in various arenas such as decentralized finance (DeFi). To be able to interact with them, it is necessary to have a wallet compatible with these developments, for example, Metamask.
In addition to the aforementioned rollups, the popular Ethereum wallet allows to operate directly on the Polygon Hermez and Boba Network rollups, among others. In this tutorial, you will learn how to configure Metamask to enable these four networks.
Note that, for other rollups not included in this list, you may have to use a special platform. In those cases you will not be able to see the balance directly in your Metamask.
If you have never used this wallet, which works as a web browser extension, It will be convenient for you to read the tutorial that CriptoNoticias has prepared. Instead, if you already have experience with this “Swiss Army Knife for DeFi”, you can proceed as follows.
First of all, to configure any of the rollups mentioned here, you need to access the corresponding section of Metamask, which will allow you to add new networks. To do this, click on the down arrow to the right of “Ethereum Main Network” (which is the default network installed on the wallet).
Once that is done, a menu will be displayed with all the networks you have installed. Underneath everything, you’ll see it say “Add Network.” Click there.

If you proceeded correctly, a new tab will open in your browser and you will see a screen like the one shown below. You must complete those 5 boxes with the information corresponding to the rollup you want to add to Metamask.
In the following list, in alphabetical order, you will learn what data you must fill in to add Arbitrum, Boba Network, Optimism and Polygon Hermez rollups to Metamask. You can simply copy and paste each data in the corresponding box… And that’s it! You will be enabled to ride the waves of Ethereum quickly and with low transaction fees.
arbitration
Arbitrum is a ZK (zero knowledge) rollup. It is developed by OffChain Labs and according to the founder of this company, Steven Goldfeder, they have the goal to monopolize a large part of the flow of Ethereum transactions. Decentralized exchange Uniswap, among other apps, have expanded into Arbitrum.
For set arbitration in your Metamask, you must add the following data:
Boba Network
It is an optimistic type rollup developed by the OMG Foundation. Its characteristic is that, in this development, the period to wait to exit the rollup is not 7 days (as it is, for example, in Optimism) but a few minutes. This is achieved, according to their website, by “community-driven liquidity pools”.
For set up Boba Network In your Metamask you must add the following data:
Optimism
Optimism is a rollup of type optimistic. CriptoNoticias recently reported the airdrop distribution of your OP governance token. One of the main applications that have been extended to this rollup is the Uniswap decentralized exchange.
For configure Optimism In your Metamask you must add the following data:
Polygon Hermez
Polygon Hermez is a rollup of the ZK type. Your goal, according to what was said by its developersis to “integrate seamlessly into the structure of the Ethereum ecosystem and enable low-cost token transfers for an inclusive economy”.
For set up Polygon Hermez In your Metamask you must add the following data:
Other networks in Metamask, besides Ethereum
The second layer solutions mentioned here are not the only networks that support the Metamask wallet. This also admits the possibility of operating outside of Ethereum, with networks such as Avalanche, BNB Smart Chain, RSK and others.
In case you are interested in configuring your wallet to be able to use these networks, you can read the tutorial “How to configure Metamask for the Binance, Avalanche, Polygon and other blockchains”, prepared by CriptoNoticias.
