Both Classic Coke and Diet Coke contain a large dose of caffeine, which can be problematic for those looking to cut down on caffeine. Although coffee accounts for the majority of caffeine intake across the board, carbonated soft drinks make up a high proportion of intake in those under 18 years of age.
Which contains more caffeine?
It is a sugary carbonated drink, known as the original energy drink, thanks to the use of coca leaves and cola fruits in the original drink. However, today’s drink has removed cocaine from its ingredients, and rumors suggest that the well-kept secret ingredients don’t get their caffeine from cola either.
As for cola-flavored soft drinks, we find three popular versions: classic, light and zero. Caffeine content depends on several factors, including the type of beverage and the serving size.
For example, one can (335 ml) of Classic Coca-Cola provides 32 mg of caffeine, which is the same amount as the Zero version. Nevertheless, the Light provides 42 mg of caffeine for the same amount of soda. Manufacturers have said that they use caffeine to add flavor to drinks and that it offers a slightly bitter aftertaste. Therefore, Diet Coke has more caffeine because it enhances the flavor and not because of its stimulating effects.
However, if these drinks are compared to others rich in caffeine, they are certainly low in this stimulant. For example, green tea, energy drinks and coffee provide more. A can of Coca-Cola contains 32 mg of caffeine. If we were to drink the same amount of coffee, we would consume 142 mg of caffeine.
This does not mean that cola is a healthier drink, since it contains sugars or artificial sweeteners that natural drinks do not provide.
Coca-Cola Zero Zero: the only one without caffeine
Despite being a great source of phenylalanine, this is the only version of the famous cola that does not contain caffeine or sugar. There is also the Light version without caffeine, but in this case it does have added calories.
The original Coca-Cola Zero contains caffeine, but in reduced amounts compared to the Light version. The company justifies the use of caffeine as a necessity. It is clearly stated on their website that the addition of caffeine to their beverages contributes to the overall flavor profile by adding a bit of bitterness and harmonizing well with other ingredients such as sugar and sweeteners to produce a sensation like no other.
So if we want to reduce the intake of this stimulant and not add calories or sugar to our diet, Zero Zero is the best option.
