- On the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the IMSS, an event was organized to publicize the daily work it does and among the figures it stands out that it has a workforce of more than 500 thousand workers.
When talking about public health in our country, there is a name that cannot be ignored. Its about Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) and the figures behind its work confirm it as one of the most important in Latin America. To date, it has just over 70 million beneficiaries, the highest figure for an organization of this type in the entire region.
On the occasion of its 80th anniversary, a meeting was held at the Congress Unit of the National Medical Center (CMN) Siglo XXI. In the first instance, its general director, Zoé Robledo, pointed out that the IMSS emerged from the Mexican Revolution and today responds to the call to protect Mexicans in moments of uncertainty and illness.
“There are still many challenges, it is true, but we have direction and we have conviction. To be the IMSS of the future. To be the IMSS of the iron will to transform the public life of Mexico”.
He also affirmed that the institution broadens its horizons to provide social security to domestic, independent and migrant workers. He supported the vaccination against COVID-19 in all corners of the country, it conducts research and participates in the justice plans of the Yaqui, O’dam and Cananea peoples.
The IMSS in figures
He stressed that the Institute grows in infrastructure, equipment, personnel, training of medical specialists, attends the child cancer as a priority through 35 State Reference Centers for the Care of Boys and Girls with Cancer (ONCOCREAN), is the ally of employers and workers and builds a preventive model in workplaces with Safe and Healthy Work Environments ( ELSSA).
He explained that there is currently an Institute that has 500 thousand workers, seven National Medical Centers that group 25 High Specialty Medical Units (UMAE), 251 Hospitals, 1,526 Family Medicine Units, 123 Social Security Centers, five Centers and 41 Healthcare Units. Medical, Biomedical, Epidemiological and Health Services Research; 12 sports units, 38 theaters, 60 stores, 18 wakes, 1,323 day care centers and four Vacation Centers.
He stated that Social Security faced the COVID-19 pandemic by reconvert almost 20,000 of its 36,000 beds to provide care and open its doors to the non-eligible population.
In turn, Dr. Rubén Argüero Sánchez, leader of the medical team that carried out the first heart transplant in Mexico in 1988mentioned that during 47 years of work the IMSS allowed him to have a productive and satisfying life in activities such as a doctor, teacher to be a human resources trainer, conduct clinics, research and “the privilege of doing something for someone who needs it most”.
Within the framework of the event to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Social Security, it was made delivery of 10 recognitions for seniority to IMSS personnel with more than 40 years of service in various units of the Institute throughout the country.
