According to the FAO, the consumption of proteins is a cornerstone for a healthy diet, since they are necessary for the development and growth of the body, its organs and muscles. According to this organization, among 173 countries, Mexicans occupy the 51st position in terms of protein consumption, with an average of 93 grams per day.
There are countries like Iceland or Hong Kong where this proportion rises to 132 grams, while in poor countries like the Central African Republic or Liberia, this proportion drops to 46 grams.
More than 50% of protein consumption comes from eggs
Specifically, in Mexico, more than half of the protein consumed in the country corresponds to a food: the egg, which has won first place with 55 percent of the preferences, as revealed during the 60th Ordinary General Assembly of the National Union of Poultry Farmers (A).
David Martín Castro Monroy, president of the UNA, indicated that poultry farming is strategic for food security and the economy in Mexico, since it generates more than 150,000 jobs, most of them in rural areas.
From Comecarne the consumption of animal protein is also promoted
In addition, he argued that Mexico belongs to one of the most important economic blocks in the world, so it is necessary to work to reinforce the complementarity of North America and reach agreements for the establishment of disease-free zones, which allow promoting the export of poultry products.
Also, in Mexico the consumption of protein of animal origin is being promoted. According to Carla Suárez, president of the Mexican Meat Council (Comecarne), in the country, the per capita consumption of beef, chicken, pork and eggs is 65 kilograms per year per person in the country, a figure lower than that of developed countries, amounting to more than 100 kilograms.
