Welcome to your daily summary of important health news.
It is estimated that some 6,800 peer-reviewed academic articles are published daily. This is a lot of science, but don’t worry. We will do the hard work for you every morning. This is your daily dose of the latest discoveries from magazines, research institutions and health news media from around the world.
BLAME YOUR BAD HEAD
According to researchers at the University of Manchester School of Business, people who work for bosses who exhibit psychopathic or narcissistic behaviors are more likely to engage in counterproductive activities at work, such as wasting time. Furthermore, they are more likely to be dissatisfied with their jobs – not surprisingly – and they are also more likely to show signs of depression.
HELP OTHERS TO BOOST YOUR OWN BRAIN
According to a new study in BMC Psychology, men who spent more time participating in community groups had better cognitive skills at age 50 than those who spent their time in other activities. The researchers believe that volunteering may somehow trigger neuroplasticity, or your brain’s ability to form new connections.
PROVIDE YOUR HEALTH (SOCIAL)
Your weekly visits to the bar could bring you a benefit: A UK review concluded that social drinkers tend to have more friends available to request emotional support. Alcohol can trigger the release of endorphins, which help strengthen social ties. It can also protect your physical health, the more alone you are, the more likely you are to have a heart attack or stroke.
