The delta variant, also known as B.1.617, was first detected last year in India. A place where it has been devastating the nation and since then it has spread to dozens of other countries, such as Mexico. What has upset the plans to return to normal.
Vaccinated in danger?
Unlike previous variants of the coronavirus, there is also evidence that people vaccinated with breakthrough infections as a result of the delta variant can transmit the infection to other people.
“Vaccinated people are transmitting it, and the extent is unclear, but there is no doubt that they are transmitting it.” So said Anthony S. Fauci, President Biden’s chief medical adviser, in late July. “People who are vaccinated, even when they are asymptomatic, can transmit the virus.”
A study shows how Delta works in vaccinated
David O’Connor, a virologist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, led a study. In which, he compared the viral load levels contained by people infected by SARS-CoV-2, specifically, with the Delta variant.
The group that was analyzed was divided into two: vaccinated and unvaccinated.
In order to study the viral load of the participants, the American researcher and his team conducted transmissibility tests. This through the now classic PCR tests, one of the most used alternatives for the diagnosis of Covid-19.
RESULTS:
The results, published in “medRxiv”, indicate that 90% of the tests – performed on 112 people – had Ct values lower than 25. This means that SARS-CoV-2 is highly contagious in the person who does it. holder.
What most surprised the researchers is that Ct levels below 25 appeared, indistinctly, in vaccinated and unvaccinated volunteers. An indication that the Delta variant attacks in the same way those who already have pharmacological protection such as anti-Covid vaccines.
Recommendations for patients vaccinated before DELTA
To reduce the risk of vaccinated people becoming infected with the Delta variant and potentially spreading it to other people. The CDC issued the following recommendations for fully vaccinated people:
- Use a face mask in indoor public settings if they are in a large or high broadcast area.
- Fully vaccinated people can choose to wear a mask regardless of the level of transmission. Especially if they or someone in their household is immunosuppressed or you are at higher risk of getting a serious illness, or if someone in your household is not vaccinated.
- People who are at increased risk of serious illness include those who are older adults. As well as those who have certain medical conditions, such as diabetes, being overweight or obese, and heart conditions.
- Get tested if you experience symptoms of COVID-19.
- Do the testing 3 to 5 days after a known exposure to someone with COVID-19 suspected or confirmed. In addition to wearing a mask in indoor public settings for 14 days after exposure or until the test result is negative.
- Isolate themselves if they have tested positive for COVID-19 in the previous 10 days or if they are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19.
* FOLLOW all applicable federal, state, local, tribal or territorial laws, rules and regulations.
