50% of university graduates in Mexico work in something they did not study.
Although many content creators generate believable stories to attract an audience and even take risks in their daily lives in order to get likes, a recent viral case brings to the table the discussion about labor intrusion. And it is that a young man pretends to be food critic in different restaurants to record their videos and document, in a comical way, the reaction of the workers.
Labor intrusiveness is a more common term than normal, in fact it is a reality that has always existed, because we often hear about people who dedicate themselves to a profession without having adequate training, nor complying with the legal requirements, something that can occur in practically all work activities, but that can represent a risk for certain services, such as medicine.
Although many argue that anyone can learn a trade or profession with practice and empiricism, prior preparation guarantees skills that can intervene and give voice to specialties that guarantee social, health or economic well-being.
According to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), in Mexico five out of 10 graduates work in something they did not study and one in four is employed in the informal sector.
Likewise, in Mexico there are at least 315 thousand 215 nano influencers, 16 thousand 806 micro influencers, 3 thousand medium influencers, 920 macro influencers and 179 mega influencers, so filtering the “specialized” content that really belongs to a professional and the one that is part of labor intrusion is more complex.
For example, among those who give oral recommendations and claim to be dentists; doctors with narratives of clinical cases or desmatologists talking about the good and bad habits of their followers… Users of TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat and other social networks have the task of investigating the licenses of the supposed “experts” they trust.
Pretend to be a food critic and receive luxury treatment
Josh Slavin He is a young man who has viralized the conversation about work intrusiveness by demonstrating how he pretends to practice a profession for which he is not prepared and of which he does not even have basic knowledge or experience.
‘slavinjoshua‘, as he is known on social networks, became popular for secretly recording his passage through medium and high-value restaurants, posing as a food critic and using a simple technique.
“I have a notebook and I’m going to go to a fancy restaurant and I’m going to act like a food critic to see if I get treated differently.” he says in several of his videos.
As he explains, the influencer makes some notes about what he thinks of the place, the menu, the service and the taste of the dishes while, covertly, but intentionally, he stares at the managers and takes pictures. It is precisely this method that has now led to Josh receiving some privileges.
One of his latest most viral stories showed the luxury treatment he received from a manager of a premium restaurant, whom he managed to cheat at only 21 years old.
“The manager came over to my table, gave me his card with his cell phone number, and He told me to call him when I need a reservation”. Carbone it was a place he had wanted to try for a long time. Both before and after taking out the notebook, the service was excellent and the team was very nice. After deciding to take out the notebook, it seemed to attract the attention of some of the team members. Even so, the service was excellent, I realized that they were watching me a little more closely”, explains the young man during the video where he is seen taking note of various dishes.
“I think it is impossible to know if they treated me differently. Admittedly, my methodology was a bit flawed :es hard to know if I was treated differently when I had never been to the restaurant for a ‘control’ visit. Many people have commented that Carbone is known for having tremendous service and I probably would have received incredible treatment anyway.
However, Josh states that although the mission was a complete success, he doesn’t know if he was really treated because of the ruse or just because it was a place of class and education.
