In the second quarter of this year, the number of workers employed in the hospitality sector increased by 76,800 people (+ 5.6%) compared to the same period in 2020 – the quarter of the previous year most affected by the closures derived from the health crisis—, standing at 1.4 million, but comparing with the same months of 2019 it represents a decrease of 304,000 workers (-17.4%).
The data, corresponding to the INE’s Active Population Survey (EPA) and analyzed by Hostelería de España, the business organization that represents restaurants, bars, cafes and pubs throughout the country, indicate that the evolution is different depending on the branch. activity: in catering activities there was an increase of 10.6%, representing 161,600 workers more than in the second quarter of 2020, reaching a figure close to 1.2 million workers. In accommodation, however, employment represents a decrease of 10.4%, with 33,400 fewer employed persons, up to 288,500 people.
Compared to the previous quarter, the hospitality sector added 211,000 jobs to those in the first, 17.1% more. Of these, 161,600 correspond to catering activities (+16.3%), and 49,400 to accommodation activities (+20.7%).
Workers compared to 2020
And comparing with 2019, there are falls in the two subsectors, of 12.7% in catering, with 167,500 fewer workers, and 32.1% in accommodation, which represents a decrease of 136,500 employed persons.
In this sense, it must be remembered that the figures for the balance of hospitality employment in Spain at the end of last year 2020 were more than worrying, with about 200,000 fewer workers, and almost 364,000 in ERTE: the number of workers affiliated with Social Security with hospitalization was close to 1.5 million people in the 2020 average, compared to the almost 1.7 million that were reached the previous year, 2019.
In 2020, the month with the greatest year-on-year drop in affiliation after the impact of the pandemic was June, with a decrease of 17.2%, which meant 306,152 affiliates less than twelve months before. In terms of the monthly rate, there was a strong impact in March and April, with recovery starting this month, and negative evolution again starting in September after the main summer months, with the biggest decline in October, which meant 90,000 fewer workers than in September.
