The young French company has shown in this “world showcase” the very interesting Hopium Machina, a very luxurious fuel cell vehicle who wants to break through in a market where competition is fierce.
The giants of the European automotive industry have seen in the battery electric car the next step in the evolution of their exclusive sedans. Hopium, on the other hand, has opted for hydrogen. And although it will not be easy to unseat the Toyota Mirai as the most popular hydrogen car, the new BMW i7 and Mercedes EQS are in the spotlight.
Hopium Machina, a hydrogen car with 1,000 km of autonomy
Beyond the difference in powertrain, which is a determining factor, Hopium anticipates that autonomy will really be the main key for the new Machina to be able to overtake the previously mentioned models on the right. The Hopium Machina will have a range of 1,000 kilometers. The company warns that the refueling process can be completed in just three minutes.
It will not be an affordable car. Hopium points to a starting price of €120,000. Therefore, it is positioned in an elite segment where a handful of models fight for the leadership of the category. At the heart of the new Machina is a hydrogen fuel cell propulsion system with two electric motors developing a total power of 368 kW (500 hp).
In the development process we have worked together with Bridgestone. Custom-made tires with low rolling resistance are fitted to maximize efficiency. Thanks to this powertrain you can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 5 seconds and reach a maximum speed of 230 km/h.
A hydrogen car made in France
The Machina will bear the “Made in France” seal. Moreover, Hopium has indicated that all the components of the vehicle will be of European origin to minimize the carbon footprint of the manufacturing process. The company will establish a production center in Normandy, in the north of France. A plant that should be ready to start the activity at some point in the year 2025.
