Key facts:
The ATM was installed in a popular coffee shop in La Ceiba.
It belongs to the company La Bitcoinera, which installed three other ATMs in the country.
Honduras already has its fifth bitcoin (BTC) and cryptocurrency automated teller machine, or ATM, up and running.
The new ATM is installed in the Avelar’s Coffee store, in the municipality of La Ceiba, in the north of the country.
Like the ATMs previously reported by CriptoNoticias, this one is owned by La Bitcoinera, a Honduran venture that describes itself as “the first company to handle the purchase and sale of different cryptocurrencies” in the Central American country.
The founder and director of this company, Juan Mayén, had explained months ago, in dialogue with this medium, how the idea of installing BTC ATMs in Honduran territory arose:
“The Bitcoinera arises from identifying the need for an avenue to buy cryptocurrencies in an automated way, since this need is not being met anywhere. (…) It also stems from my desire to provide my fellow citizens with access to bitcoin and ether.”
Juan Mayén, founder and director of La Bitcoinera.
About the La Ceiba ATM reported here, allows the sale of BTC with lempiras, the currency of Honduras.
Other ATMs in Honduras are in Tegucigalpa, the country’s capital. City Mall, Casa Quinchón and Torre Morazán are the commercial establishments where these devices are housed. There is also one in the industrial zone of San Pedro Sula.

Says Mayen: “we are planning to place 2 more ATMs in Honduras. We’re looking at locations. This is the fifth ATM that we located. We haven’t put them on CoinATM Radar yet, but we will soon. In addition, we hold events in which we teach the population how to create their own Bitcoin wallet.”
