Updated Continuity. This may be the summary of the Honda Racing project for the 2022 WTCR season. Among other things because The Japanese firm will once again have four Honda Civic Type R on the grill, piloted for the fourth consecutive year by Esteban Guerrieri, Nestor Girolami, Tiago Monteiro and Attila Tassi. So far the continuity, because few could expect that Honda would decide to break the link with Münnich Motorsport and bet on another structure to manage two of its cars in the upcoming World Cup campaign.
In a surprising move, Honda has reached an agreement with Team Engstler for the Wiggensbach-based line-up to run two of the brand’s Honda Civic Type Rs in WTCR. In its transition from ‘customer-team’ from Hyundai to Honda, the German structure will maintain the support of Liqui Moly as main sponsor. The colors of the company will thus star in the liveries of the cars with whom Tiago Monteiro and Attila Tassi will compete, teammates since 2019, first in the ranks of KCMG and then in Münnich.

The identity of the team with which the Argentines Guerrieri and Girolami will compete will be announced later, although this structure as well as Team Engstler will receive direct support from JAS Motorsport, a Honda partner in charge of the development and construction of the Honda Civic Type R with which the brand competes in the WTCR. In the case of Team Engstler, Monteiro’s experience with Honda will be key, since the Portuguese has accumulated 11 seasons with the Japanese brand.
Franz Engstler, director of the team with which Monteiro and Tassi will compete, has assured: «It is a very proud moment for the team to have the opportunity to work with Honda in WTCR.. It seems that we have a great opportunity for the team to grow in WTCR. Our driver line-up is strong and having a driver of Tiago’s experience brings obvious benefits. Attila is also a great addition. We are very motivated with the start of this new project with Honda».
Mads Fisher, head of JAS Motorsport, added: «We are excited to be working with such a strong and formidable team as Team Engstler.. It’s great to have a team with his pedigree on board. His decision to race the Honda Civic Type R is a true show of confidence in a car entering its fifth season in WTCR and in the support we are going to give from JAS Motorsport. It is a professional and competitive team and we want to achieve success together in 2022»”
