Just a couple of hours ago there was a new earthquake in Chile of magnitude 5.5 on the Richter scale, which was felt in the regions of Coquimbo, Valparaíso, Metropolitana, O’Higgins, Maule and Ñuble. In this context, it is where Users decided to highlight the alert made by Google to Android devices after this new tremor.
The system is a free service that detects earthquakes around the world and can alert Android users before the shaking starts.
The company ShakeAlert® is in charge of detecting anomalous situations using a crowdsourcing strategy.
According to the organization’s description: “All mobile phones contain very small accelerometers that can detect vibrations and speed, signs that an earthquake might be taking place.. If the phone detects something it thinks may be an earthquake, it sends a signal to our earthquake detection server along with the approximate location where the tremor occurred.. The server then combines the information from many phones to find out if an earthquake is taking place. This method uses the world’s more than 2 billion Android phones as mini-seismographs to create the world’s largest earthquake detection network; hePhones detect the vibration and shaking speed of an earthquake and alert Android users in affected areas accordingly.
Detected earthquakes can also be viewed on Google Search. you just have to search “earthquake near me” to get more information about any seismic activity around you.
Android has two types of notifications designed to alert users of an earthquake. Both types of alerts are sent only in the event of earthquakes of magnitude 4.5 or greater.
danger alert
- Designed to warn you of light tremors and provide more information when you tap the notification.
- Only sent to users who will experience tremors of 3 and 4 degrees on the MMI scale during an earthquake of magnitude 4.5 or greater
- Respect your device’s volume, Do Not Disturb, and notification settings.
Alert to take action
- Designed to get your attention before you start to notice moderate to strong shaking, so you can take steps to protect yourself.
- It is only sent to users who will experience tremors of 5 or higher on the MMI scale during an earthquake of magnitude 4.5 or higher.
- It will ignore Do Not Disturb settings, turn the screen on, and play a loud sound.
This notification was highlighted by network users, who for the first time received the Google alert on their cell phones, even a second before the earthquake.
Among the comments we can find some who assure that it is a super efficient system and that it debuted in a good way in our country, this although the numbers were a little far from the real magnitude.
“It also hit me, it even gave me the magnitude of the earthquake in full haha Samsung, I love you”, “nice update”, “He warned me right when it started”, were some of the words of netizens on Twitter.
