If Mexico is characterized by something, it is by its exciting history. But among acclaimed characters and movements that marked the country, there is an event that has received little benefit, at least on the big screen: The battle of Chapultepec Castle and the existence of the Hero Children. Here we present the trailer and everything you need to know about Heroesthe Mexican film that promises to spark great conversations.
What is it about?
Although much has been said and written about what happened at Chapultepec Castle, Héroes plans to tell a different story. The Hero Children will be the main point of this film, although with certain variations in their anecdote. It will not be a film about history, but a film focused on what led these characters to make the decision that we all know.
This was commented by its director, Ricardo Arnaiz, at a press conference (via the capital):
“We are not going to address the story of traditional child heroes, we are going to tell the story of these brave young people that very few of us know. They are real child heroes who do not leave for the love of Mexico, who do not necessarily give their lives for their country, but they do give it for their brothers and friends.
Cast and production crew
A great team of experienced actors and new talent will bring to life the characters that stood out 176 years ago. Silverio Palacios (Eusebio Llantadas), Gerardo Taracena (Captain Alvarado), Ariel López Padilla (Nicolás Bravo), Mario Iván Martínez (John Quitman) and Plutarco Haza (José Cuéllar) are some of the most experienced actors that we will see in the film.
To give life to the Hero Children, these were the chosen actors:
- Mike Alva Jr. – Juan de la Barrera
- David Duran – Francisco Marquez
- Andrés Vázquez – Agustin Melgar
- Tavo Betancourt – Juan Escutia
- Joshua Ponce de Leon – Vicente Suarez
- Jaime Maquedo – Fernando Montes de Oca
The young Paola Ramones, Elaine Haro, Melissa Ortega, Zury Shasho, Derek Arnauda and Nicolás Haza Sargento are also part of the cast.
The aforementioned Ricardo Arnaiz is responsible for the direction. Heroes represents a great challenge in his career, since he has dedicated more than a decade to animated films. In his career we can find tapes like Nikté, The legend of the Nahuala, The legend of the mummies of Guanajuato, The legends: The origin and the americanamong other.
The film’s music will be provided by Karim Bojalil and the Puebla Symphony Orchestra, while the main theme will have the voice of Aleks Syntek. The production was carried out independently and with the support of Valquirico Cine, Tres Piedras and LeGrand Films.
Why give the film a chance?
Although there is plenty of material around this important moment, Héroes represents the first Mexican film to be filmed on such a scale. According to the filmmakers, pre-production started in November 2021, and having a script ready took more than 12 months and 6 treatments. The reason? A great investigation to portray the events with the greatest possible respect. Most of the filming was done in Puebla, and it lasted less than two months.
«The film does not seek to leave a historical lesson. But we do want it to have a well-grounded context. Carlos Ostos (production designer) had access to files that very few people know about, where we were able to see death certificates of our characters, where we were effectively able to verify and ensure that the child heroes existed”, added the director.
When is the Mexican movie released? Heroes?
The film is scheduled to be released for September 2023. An exact day has not been revealed.
