One of the most discussed aspects is the duration of medical shifts. What it mentions is that they must occur twice a week at most and will have intervals of at least three days between each one of them. On business days, shifts start at the time the morning shift ends and end at the time established to start the next morning shift, in accordance with the applicable provisions of the health institution where the medical residency is performed.
The duration of the shifts on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays will be 24 hours, beginning and ending activities as specified in the applicable provisions of the health institution where the medical residency is carried out. Resident doctors who end their shift on a business day must continue the activities described for the morning shift in the operating program.
The medical residents they must only comply with the shifts foreseen in the operative program of the specialty. The personnel of the medical units receiving residents must only apply the shifts established in the operating program, respecting the shift roles and schedules indicated. Those who carry out a medical residency cannot assign shifts to other resident doctors.
The resident doctor must be available when his services are required during shifts and may use the designated rest areas when the workload allows it and notifying the person in charge of the service.
Scheduled swaps or shift changes must be authorized by the head of the service and/or the full professor, with the approval of the head of the area responsible for training human resources of the medical unit receiving residents; in cases of urgency during a shift, they must be authorized by the highest authority present at that time, who will notify the area responsible for human resources training the next business day.
