HBO has launched a season 4 of ‘True Detective’ that will not feature of Nic Pizzolatto, creator of the acclaimed crime series. In exchange, he will participate Barry Jenkinsdirector of the Oscar-winning ‘Moonlight’ -for which he also won the award for best adapted screenplay-, although in executive production tasks.
‘True Detective: Night Country’
For now, HBO has chosen isa lopezMexican filmmaker behind titles like ‘Efectos secondary’ or ‘Todo mal’, to deal with the script of what is being called by the name of ‘True Detective: Night Country’. The fourth season still does not have the green light, but if it goes ahead, López would also be in charge of directing the first episode.
For its part, Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, protagonists of the first season, will continue to be involved as executive producers, a role they have played so far in all the episodes of the HBO series. Pizzolatto is likely to be credited as such, but will not formally participate.
The news, given exclusively by The Hollywood Reporter, comes more than three years after the end of the third season. HBO had been trying for some time to find a way to move forward with the series and everything indicates that it will want keep the brand but with a different creative touch.
The truth is that the agreement that linked Pizzolatto with HBO came to an end in 2020, so there is little surprise that he does not participate in this fourth season. The question now is to know if it makes sense that it continues to be called ‘True Detective’ or if that can end up becoming too heavy a slab.
