Before the Canadian filmmaker Denis Villeneuve (Blade Runner 2049) will risk lifting an adaptation of the complex science fiction novel Dune, the legendary director David Lynch made his own attempt decades before… without favorable results. Regarding his 1984 film of the same name, it is well known that —in addition to being a box office flop and critically battered— the sheer experience of filming it was very frustrating. And it seems that to date, the septuagenarian filmmaker does not want to run into anything related to the universe Dunenor as a spectator.
In a recent interview published by the French magazine Cahiers du CinemaLynch was blunt regarding whether he had already had the opportunity to see the adaptation directed by Villeneuve and released only in 2021. “I’ll never see her, and I don’t even want you to tell me about her, ever”he asked his interlocutor.
Considering the bad taste of his eighties version, it may be valid to assume that David Lynch chooses to shun the Dune starring Timothée Chalamet, not for having a problem with this movie specifically; rather, it could be due to his desire not to relive past traumas. Let’s remember that, in years past, the veteran filmmaker even described his adaptation as Dune as “a gigantic sadness in his life” and the only title in his filmography that does not make him even the least bit proud.
I’m proud of everything except Dune”, commented the winner of an honorary Oscar in 2020 (via). “I really liked working on different movies. It’s not so much about pride but about the pleasure of doing it, the enjoyment of the work. I have enjoyed working in all of these various mediums. I feel very lucky to have been able to enjoy those things and experience them.”

For his part, Denis Villeneuve commented to Empire two years ago when he saw Dune David Lynch for the first time, was “half satisfied.” Although he perceived outstanding passages, there were also several negative aspects that prevented him from enjoying it from start to finish, according to what he said at the time. From there a need arose for him to have an adaptation of Frank Herbert’s novel with a different approach and to be translated in better quality.
I’m a huge fan of David Lynch. He is the teacher », commented the fiftieth-year-old filmmaker. “When I saw Dune [de Lynch], I remember being excited, but his version… There are parts that I love and other elements that I’m less comfortable with. So I remember being half satisfied. That’s why I thought: ‘There is still a film to be made about that book, but with a different sensibility.’
