CPS authorized the Metropolitan Police to charge Harvey Weinstein
“CPS authorized the Metropolitan Police to charge Harvey Weinstein with two counts of indecent assault on a woman in August 1996,” said Rosemary Ainslie, chief of the CPS Special Crimes Division.
In February 2020, Weinstein was sentenced in the United States for rape and sexual assault and sentenced to 23 years in prison, in a landmark verdict for the #MeToo movement.
Last week, he lost his bid to have a New York appeals court overturn the conviction, and is awaiting trial on other sexual assault charges in California.
Nearly 90 women, including American actresses Umar Thurman, Angelina Jolie and Gwyneth Paltrow and Mexican Salma Hayek, Weinstein has been accused of harassment or assaultsince the case broke in 2017.
The producer of movies like pulp fiction (1994), shakespeare in love (1998) and Kill Bill (2003) has always argued that all their sexual encounters were consensual.
As the accusations in the United States unfolded, British police announced that they were also investigating a series of sexual assault allegations against Weinstein in the United Kingdom.
Rosemary Ainslie said that the charges against the former American producer come as a result of “an analysis of the evidence” collected by Scotland Yard.
