Harrison Ford has changed his mind about whether Rick Deckard, his character in the iconic science fiction film Blade Runner (1982), is or is not human. Or rather, it turns out that he was always fully aware that his position was wrong and yet he chose to believe it.
Although Ford declared for decades to be in favor of Deckard’s human nature, in a recent interview with esquire admitted that the protagonist of Blade Runner he was at all times a replicant; that is to say, an artificially created humanoid entity, like many that roam illegally in this dystopian version of Los Angeles (portrayed in the film) and that, ironically, the protagonist is tasked with eliminating.
“I always knew I was a replicant. But I wanted to oppose it. I think a replicant would want to believe that he is human. At least he did it », he declared to the outlet.
Director Ridley Scott, who from the beginning was opposed to believing that Deckard was human, placed several clues in the film that proved him right. Among them, a sequence stands out in which the character daydreams about a unicorn. It’s not a revealing moment on its own, but it inevitably points to Deckard being a replicant if he’s linked to it in the final scene of the film; the one in which he discovers an origami figure in the shape of a unicorn in his apartment. After all, the fact that another person has knowledge of his dream —which is implied by said paper figure— indicates that the dream did not come naturally to him, but rather that someone else implanted it in him.
For Scott, the unicorn factor was always decisive in clarifying the nature of Rick Deckard. “If you don’t understand, you’re an idiot,” he has previously stated (via G.Q.).

However, despite all the clues against him, Harrison Ford constantly put forward his desire that the protagonist of Blade Runner He wasn’t a replicant.
“I thought it was important that the public could have a human representative on the screen, someone with whom they could have an emotional understanding,” the actor commented in 2013 (via Digital Spy). “Ridley didn’t think that was that important.”
Over the years, the Rick Deckard issue was reported to have generated disagreement and heated debates between Ford and Scott. In 2017, director Denis Villeneuve claimed that he himself was able to witness such discussions during the filming of the sequel. Blade Runner 2049.
“Harrison and Ridley are still arguing about it,” the Canadian shared with CinemaBlend. “If you put them in the same room, they don’t agree. And they start talking really loud when they do. It’s very funny”.
We will see Harrison Ford soon in Indiana Jones and the dial of fate, fifth installment of the iconic saga about the intrepid archaeologist and treasure hunter. Its premiere in Mexican theaters is scheduled for June 29, 2023.
