The version of “Pinocchio” from the mexican director Guillermo del Toro was nominated for Oscar to best animated filmannounced this Tuesday the Hollywood academy.
The films “Turning Red” by Domee Shi; “Puss In Boots: The Last Wish” by Joel Crawford; Dean Fleischer Camp’s “Marcel the Shell with Shoes On” and Chris Williams’ “The Sea Beast” round out this category.
In his first nomination in this category, del Toro reinvents Carlo Collodi’s classic tale of the wooden puppet that turns into a boy.
With the stop motion animated film, the Mexican director explores universal themes such as life, death, rebellion and the complex relationship with his father.
Other Best Animated Feature nominations
Family ties are also at the center of the film “Turning Red”, which portrays the tortuous passage from childhood to adolescence of a young woman who has to face the pressure to be perfect as demanded by her mother.
The second part of “Puss in Boots” explores the path of maturation and the recognition of vulnerability of the egocentric cat from “Shrek”, to whom the Spanish Antonio Banderas gives his voice.
Fleischer Camp’s film follows the daily life of Marcel, a little snail grieving the loss of his family, narrated in a comic mockumentary format.
While the Netflix film “The Sea Beast” portrays the interesting duo that forms between a girl and a monster hunter.
So far, del Toro has been awarded for this film in the Golden Globes and the Critics Choice Awards and also competes in the same category at the awards BAFTA.
This is the only nomination for the Mexican film at the upcoming awards that will take place at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles (USA) on March 12.
