The videogame Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy I was going to delve into Rocket’s origin story, but in the end it didn’t, now they explain the reasons
Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy it followed Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket, and Groot trying to take down the Universal Church of Truth, which had begun to successfully brainwash a vast majority of the galaxy. The story included many surprises and put a lot of effort into making players care about these new adaptations of the Guardians.
From the character interactions to exploring their tragic origin stories, there was a solid foundation for this galactic superhero team. It has now been revealed that players could have witnessed even deeper backstories. In this case, it would have been Rocket Raccoon’s origins on the planet Halfworld.
In an interview with The Gamer on Guardians of the Galaxythe senior narrative director of the project, Mary DeMarle, revealed some of the content of the story that, unfortunately, could not be seen in the video game.
DeMarle revealed that one of the plots the team was going to include was a trip “to Halfword… to explore the origins of Rocket”:
“When we were originally conceiving the game and the story, we had big ambitions. Sometimes we think that we are being strict and concise and later, when we go into production, we realize that we cannot do that. So one of the things was that you were going to go to Halfworld and you were going to explore the origins of Rocket. We had an interesting concept of what Halfworld would be and what we were going to do, but eventually when we started production we realized that including Halfword was taking the story in a different direction and bloating it up and not allowing us to focus on the heart of what we needed, so Halfworld ended up being cut relatively early in production”.
Maybe in the Guardians of the Galaxy sequel?
Many fans of the game will recall that there were plenty of signs that Rocket’s origin story was something we were going to explore in the game. One of them was the exchanges between him and the other Guardians about why he was so afraid of water.
On top of that, there was also an unlockable outfit from “Hero of Halfworld” and various collectibles that showcased his life in Halfworld. It’s a shame that it was eventually cut from the game, but it certainly might not have fit with what the story ended up being.
However, Rocket’s origins aren’t something we won’t get to see one day, as the third installment of the Guardians in the MCU is rumored to explore them.
Rumors not only indicate that a part of the story will revolve around his origin in Halfworld, but that the villain The High Evolutionary will be the main villain of the James Gunn-directed film, played by Peacemaker’s Chukwudi Iwuji.
