It is a fact, we Mexicans love to party and from December 12 until the beginning of January there are countless possibilities for gatherings: posadas, exchanges, dinners and even the Three Kings’ Rosca. This period of almost four weeks is known as the Guadalupe Reyes. We tell you how the term came about.
What is the Guadalupe Reyes Marathon?
Several sources agree that the designation arose in Mexico City in the 1990s, with the beginning of security operations for the end of the year celebrations. To date, these begin on December 12, Day of the Virgin of Guadalupe and conclude on January 6, Three Kings’ Day.
Consequently, the term Guadalupe Reyes was adopted by Mexican popular culture to designate the marathon of food, drink and socializing that awaits us during that period for the different festivities: cod, leg, tamales, punch (with and without picket) and cider ; and of course, the Three Kings Rosca accompanied by hot chocolate.

Finally, this year the celebration race begins on Tuesday, December 12 and concludes on Saturday, January 6. Although it is true that we could consider the Candelaria festival as part of the marathon, it is not taken into account since there is almost a month difference between Three Kings and this date.
