The Great Calakmul Region in Campeche it will have the largest tropical forest reserve in the country; This was recently announced by the Secretary of the Environment and Natural Resources, María Luisa Albores at the morning conference at the National Palace.
In addition, It will be the second largest in the world, after the Amazon in Brazil.
Also, during the weekly report on actions for environmental care on the Mayan Train route, it was revealed that this protected natural space will house 1.5 million hectares.
Next, the official mentioned that the Gran Calakmul Region will join the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve and will be integrated into the Areas Voluntarily Destined for Conservation and Protected Natural Areas.
As a consequence, the project will achieve the biological connectivity of Calakmul with the Laguna de Términos, in the Gulf of Campeche.
We are considering making the largest tropical forest reserve in the country (…) and it becomes very important because we are going to be joining what is the protected natural area of Laguna de Términos right with this large area of tropical forest that will be the extension, the expansion of Calakmul”.

Estimated extension of the Gran Calakmul Region
The Calakmul Biosphere Reserve, located in Campeche, was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1989 and has an area of more than 700,000 hectares.
This protected natural space is home to hundreds of species of flora and fauna; highlighting the jaguar, which has achieved one of the largest populations in Central America there.
For its part, the Laguna de Términos was declared a flora and fauna protection area in 1994 and also has more than 700 thousand hectares where more than two thousand species of plants and animals live.
The union of these two natural conservation areas will reach 1.5 million hectares.
