This series of stories originally published in 2014 as part of the New 52 continuity from DC, Gotham Academywhere he chronicled the comings and goings of an eclectic group of students at the prestigious senior preparatory school of Gothamcharacters in the series included Olive Silverlock, Mia “Maps” Mizoguchi, Pomeline Fritch Y Ray Heathcliff. The series eventually ran for over thirty issues and even crossed over with Boom!
Now, while elements of the series have bled into a canon of DC larger, particularly in maps which was briefly established as one of the robins from Batman, Gotham Academy has not published new installments since August 2017: “When we started Gotham Academy, we knew a lot of influential touchstones we wanted to touch”explained Cloonan in a 2017 interview. “The mysteries of Batman, Harry Potter, Nancy Drew; they gave us an idea of the world we wanted to create and then it became a question of what story we wanted to tell. Olive Silverlock became that story and other characters, Maps and Kyle, fell into “. in place around him. Maps, in particular, was created as a complement to Olive, she represents her “true north”.
“I think these characters fit well into the Batman universe as we created them”added Kershl. “Not so much on the surface, but Olive and Maps are almost a good analogy for Batman and Robin or like Holmes and Watson. But after seeing how things work after issue #8, those analogies may not be accurate anymore.”
