Mexican labor authorities annulled the legitimization process of the collective contract of workers of a plant of the American multinational Goodyear in San Luis Potosíin the center of the country, before a possible fraud of the union.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare (STPS), the ballot box in which the workers’ votes were deposited was violatedwhich was corroborated with surveillance videos and documentation provided by the tire company.
According to the preliminary reports of the personnel of the Federal Labor Center, who was present at the vote, as well as to surveillance videos and documentation provided by the company, it is evident that, at the end of electoral day, members of said union, in possible collusion with company surveillance personnel, they stole the ballot box used on the first day of voting,” he said.
The Mexican Government agency ordered the suspension of this process, in which 1,130 unionized workers of the Confederation of Mexican Workers (CTM) participated, through the “Miguel Trujillo” union, and most of whom had rejected the collective agreement.
The Ministry of Labor and the Federal Labor Center strongly condemn these events, which violate the principles of union freedom and democracy established by the labor reform”, he added.
He also reported that the Federal Labor Center, in charge of all judicial processes in labor matters, will take immediate action so that the consultation is restored in the coming days “under exceptional conditions of security and surveillance” and without the intervention of any union.
The STPS also announced that the observation of the process of national and international authorities will be requested to “provide certainty and transparency to the new election.”
He warned that criminal complaints will be filed against those responsible for these events and legal proceedings will be initiated against those involved.
The Government of Mexico endorses its commitment to guarantee the validity of the principles of freedom of association and authentic collective bargaining”, the STPS added.
The Mexican government also summoned the Goodyear company and its workers in San Luis Potosí to “collaborate with the labor authority by providing information that allows those responsible to be identified, investigated, and punished.”
This is the second time that the collective agreement of the workers of this Goodyear plant has been sought to be legitimized.
On February 26, a first vote was held, which was also canceled due to the intervention of the CTM union, and for which the Liga Sindical Obrera Mexicana filed a labor complaint within the framework of the Mexico-United States-Canada Treaty (T-MEC ) since last April 20.
