One of the biggest challenges today is immersion in precision medicine. In some areas, such as oncology, the targeted use of innovative treatments requires knowledge of the biological characteristics of tumors to provide more effective results. Although the reality is that it also offers favorable results against other types of diseases.
From 2021, the Shriners Hospital for Children Mexicothe leading civil association in Latin America in providing Pediatric Orthopedics with free comprehensive treatments for patients with disorders of the musculoskeletal system and sequelae (scars) caused by burns, unveiled its first precision medicine and genomics project nationwide.
This project is part of SHC Genomics and Precision Medicine Project carried out throughout the Shriners Hospital network in the United States, Mexico and Canada that seeks to help patients through new genetic discoveries of diseases.
How does precision medicine work?
The main objective of this research is to collect saliva samples from patients and their biological parents to perform next-generation sequencing that allows understanding the genomic variability of individuals, their environment and lifestyle, as well as evaluating the efficacy of their clinical practices. ; and discover new and improved treatments for their patients.
Currently, the Shriners Hospital for Children Mexico is developing this project headed by Dr. Thania Ordaz (Geneticist) who explains that the study of genomics helps improve human health through a more appropriate environment and clinical approach, helping patients, family and doctors to make better decisions.
In the world there are 350 million people with rare diseases that are usually difficult to detect; however, physicians specialized in genomics can work on next-generation sequences, thus allowing timely and accurate detection, with precise molecular diagnoses.
Over time, medicine has presented great scientific and technological advances that have allowed us to understand human diseases, to the point of being able to count on new therapies that help improve the quality of life. However, many highly complex diseases still need to be understood, so the Mexico Shriners Hospital for Children will continue to search for explanations that will broaden its knowledge.
Currently favorable results
This type of project, the revolution in genomic medicine and its relationship with other areas of study give rise to the development of preventive medicine; in addition to addressing diseases in a comprehensive manner, including biological, environmental and behavioral factors that can modify and even cause diseases.
From the above, precision medicine has been developed and no longer waits for a disease to appear to cure it, but anticipates the problem. In addition, pathologies are also addressed in an integral way, including biological, environmental and behavioral factors that can modify and even cause health problems.
The Shriners Hospital for Children Mexico is for children from 0 to 18 years old with orthopedic conditions and sequelae (scars) of burns, it is totally free. And it only attends by appointment.
