Meanwhile, Michael Bloomberg would drop to third place with 1.7 billion dedicated to altruistic causes.
At the end of 2022, Musk’s net worth was $137 billion.according to the billionaires index Forbes (now it is 197,000 million dollars). Therefore, those 1,900 million dollars equaled 1.4% of his net worth at that time and 1.6% of his stake in Tesla late last year, explains CNN.
Elon Musk’s generosity did not prevent the firing of workers seeking to unionize
This week a group of Tesla employees in New York announced their intention to unionize. Just 24 hours later, the union Workers United Upstate New York (TWU) denounced the dismissal of 30 workers “in retaliation for their union activity,” says a comprehensive report from The New York Times.
This Wednesday, February 15, TWU released a statement explaining that the automaker’s staff also received an email informing them that they had updated their policies. a new norm prohibits them from recording workplace meetings without the permission of all participants.
“This policy violates federal labor law and also circumvents the law of consent of a part of New York to record conversations,” they detailed.
Workers Unites called the layoffs “unacceptable” and noted that the goals set for Tesla workers are “unfair, unachievable, ambiguous and ever-changing.”
The Rochester Regional Joint Board of United Workers filed a complaint against Tesla with the National Labor Relations Board, accusing the electric vehicle maker of unfair labor practices.
It is not the first time that Elon Musk has spoken out against unions. In a 2018 tweet, he said employees would lose their stock options if they formed a union. The National Labor Relations Board of the United States had to intervene and ask the South African to delete the tweet, since the threat violated the rights of the staff.
