Although the People’s Party (PP), a conservative grouping, managed to win the general elections in Spain, their candidate faces great difficulties to become president. This is because the PP he did not get enough votes in parliament to reach the majority needed to govern. The lack of majority support makes the possibility of their candidate assuming the presidency difficult, becausewould need to form alliances with other political forces to establish a stable government.
According to information from EFE, the general elections on Sunday produced a possible political blockade in Spain, due to the fact that the conservative PP does not add enough support to the extreme right of Vox, while the acting president of the Government, the socialist Pedro Sánchez, depends on the Catalan independentistas to revalidate the position.
On one of the hardest-fought electoral nights in Spanish democracy, Alberto Núñez Feijóo has emerged victorious with 136 deputies, beating his predecessor, Pablo Casado, by 47 votes in the 2019 general elections. Although the conservative leader has obtained almost fifteen more votes than Pedro Sánchez, the current acting president, the latter has also improved his results, going from 120 to 122 deputies.
For his part, according to EFE, the PP candidate, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, has admitted to his party that “with the same intensity that the polls failed” in 23J, the formation has not reached the “expectations”, although he says he does not regret having demanded “to win by a lot compared to those who are satisfied with losing by less”.
The two leaders are depending on their respective political partners for a possible inauguration. Feijóo is in a more complicated position, because even with Vox’s 33 votes, he does not reach an absolute majority. On the other hand, the sum of Sánchez’s regular partners is closer to the 176 votes needed for an inauguration in the first round: Sumar (31), ERC (7), EH Bildu (6), PNV (5) and BNG (1). The decision could fall to the 7 Junts deputies, according to media reports.
The Popular Party (PP) experienced a notable increase in votes and seats compared to the last elections, which were held in November 2019.
