We know that the One-Punch Man manga, created by Yusuke Murata and ONE, always has us on the edge of our seat, waiting for the next unexpected power surge. But maybe the chapters most recent of this work finally modify the main trope of this franchiseas they have taken Garou and Saitama to new limits never seen before in this incredible universe.
Chapter 164 originally showed the climax of the confrontation between Garou and Saitama. The former hero hunter was further transformed into a monstrous being, surpassing all expectations that any other villain would have raised, unleashing all his power on the bald hero, who did not flinch as usual, despite the fact that the power of Garou’s blows distorted the morphology of the planet Earth. In the end, Saitama convinced (or forced) Garou to sit down and talk face to face and face the harsh reality: You can never get over the bald hero.
But, as we had mentioned before, there was the possibility that this point was crucial for the story as it had more than one possible ending. In the new version, the mysterious entity known as “God” approaches Garou after Saitama punches him, assuming the form of his former master Bang so as not to scare off the powerful monster. Under that guise, God convinces Garou to accept the power from him, transforming him into “Awakened Garou’s Cosmic Fear Mode”, who resumes fighting Saitama.
This is a major twist from the previous chapter. In the original webcomic, Saitama ends the fight by convincing Garou that he will never be a monster., despite his efforts, because deep down, he is nothing more than a subject who believes in justice and in protecting the innocent, not in destroying humanity. Here, Garou’s story relates to God, who is known for trying to seduce people with the promise of power for mysterious purposes.
In the case of Homeless Emperor, God regained his powers, consuming his life in the process, and the same could happen to Garou., although he seems to care little about the risks that his decision will bring. Also, the previous version of the chapter teased that the distortion in Earth’s gravitational field caused by Saitama and Garou’s battle weakened the seal that trapped God. The new version confirms this, showing God’s massive feet appearing from what appear to be dimensional portals.
This massive change between the two versions of chapter 164 suggests that the two main stories currently taking place in the manga, Garou’s journey to become the “ultimate evil” and God’s sinister plans, will now be connected and could end the universe as we know it. It will be interesting to know what will be the final destination that our protagonists will now have.
Garou finally reveals his cosmic form in One-Punch Man.
This will further advance the overall plot of the manga and also hopefully reveal some of One-Punch Man’s biggest mysteries, like who exactly is God and the true role of the S-Class hero Blast 1 and his team in this battle. Fans were surely surprised by the updated story of One-Punch Man’s latest chapter, wondering if Garou’s new god-enhanced form will be enough to finally give Saitama a real challenge.
The authors of One-Punch Man have completely redone the ending of the last chapter from the hit manga to give Garou a major upgrade that brings the mysterious God villain into the fray and perhaps creates the first true challenge for the overpowered hero Saitama. This would bring down the main trope of the franchise.
Yusuke Murata often redraws entire chapters of the series between their publication in the digital magazine Tonari no Young Jump and the release of the print volumes. However, these are usually just cosmetic changes, and the plot written by One remains the same. The current version of One-Punch Man is a remake of the original One webcomic with art provided by Murata. The story remains largely the same, with minor adjustments and some new plot lines introduced. However, what happened with chapter 164 of the series completely changes this dynamic as we have mentioned before.
