It’s finally happening! Almost three decades after their first appearance in the cult 90s series, the Gargoyles will take flight again, this time in format live-action. A project that falls into the hands of one of the most important companies in contemporary horror and fantasy cinema. Can they do justice to the creation of Greg Weisman?
About Gargoyles
Originally broadcast between 1994 and 1997, Gargoyles, gothic heroes revolves around the eponymous fantastic creatures who are transported from a castle in Scotland to a modern New York. After spending a millennium in a state of petrification after being betrayed by the humans they were supposed to protect, they finally awaken from that spell and assume the mantle of protectors of the “Big Apple.”
The series produced by Walt Disney Television Animation had a total of 78 episodes over three seasons. Subsequently, video games and comics were released that reinforced its cult status.
Notably, the series arrived during a time of innovation in American animation, with a wave of shows with more complex and darker stories that also enjoyed great acclaim, such as Batman: The Animated Series either X Men.

Who will be behind the live-action of Gargoyles?
Despite the rumors, Disney has not insisted on its efforts to bring the animated series to other formats. Around 2010, it was considered making a film live-action. However, the failure of The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, with Nicolas Cage, made the plans go overboard. In 2018, it was reported that Jordan Peele (Flees!) had a proposal for an adaptation, but this was not supported by the studio.
We reach October 2023. The Hollywood Reporter confirms that Atomic Monsterthe filmmaker’s production company James Wan which is about to merge with Blumhouse, will host a series live-action of Gargoyles. In addition to being linked to all of Wan’s directorial projects since The spell 2 (2016), the company has produced all the titles in the Conjuring universe since 2014 and films such as When the lights turn off (2016), Mortal Kombat (2021) or M3GAN (2022).
As showrunner and screenwriter of live-action of Gargoyles we will have Gary Daubermandirector and writer of Annabelle 3: Coming home (2018) and the next The mystery of Salem’s Lot. His other screenwriting credits include both previous installments of Annabelle (2014), Annabelle 2: the creation (2017) and The nun (2018), as well as both films Itby Andy Muschietti. Dauberman is no stranger to television either, as he co-wrote the pilot and executive produced the DC series, Swamp Thing.
Gary Dauberman, James Wan and Michael Clear will also serve as executive producers. The project is in its early stages of development, so there are no additional details about its possible cast or directors. We will have them updated.
When does the live-action of Gargoyles?
The series will premiere exclusively through Disney Plus. At the moment, there is no estimated window for its release.
