- Oliver Sonne: when do you receive your ID and why would you play the Qualifiers in October?
The last time we saw Sánchez in action with Cantolao was on August 12, 2023, in the narrow defeat against Cienciano in Cusco, on date 8 of the Clausura Tournament. Until that moment, he had participated in 21 games with the La Punta team, remaining as a starter in 100% of these games and, what stands out most, only once had he not completed the 90 minutes.
Despite these outstanding statistics for any Peruvian U-20 player, even surpassing in minutes the star of that category, Joao Grimaldo of Sporting Cristal, Arón Sánchez began to be excluded from the Chalaco first team. It all started in the match against Alianza Atlético, where he was called up but remained on the substitute bench. What happened next was even more surprising: he was not part of those called up for the matches against Unión Comercio, Alianza Lima, Carlos Mannucci and Melgar.
Why doesn’t Arón Sánchez play anymore?
Depor was able to confirm that Arón Sánchez does not have any injury that would justify his absence from the Clausura Tournament matches. Given this situation, this newspaper tried to contact the board of directors of the Buenos Aires team so that they could explain the situation of the defender, but unfortunately they did not receive any response.
All this happened after two offers arrived from abroad for the footballer. The last one from Hatta FC of the United Arab Emirates, which finally ended up being declined. According to what could be investigated from the Asian country, an agreement had already been reached between clubs, with the last word finally remaining with Arón Sánchez. After analyzing the terms of the relationship, he decided that she was not very attractive to follow his career.
After this decision, the central defender went from being an undisputed starter to not being considered even among the substitutes, which leaves an open question: Was it a technical or managerial decision? However, the first option is losing strength after the departure of Argentine coach Adrián Taffarel was announced just two days ago, being replaced by Jersi Sócola.
It is important to highlight that Arón Sánchez’s contract ends at the end of the year. This means that, given that a sale of his transfer has not been finalized, the defender could leave La Punta as a free agent. This represents an important attraction for any club interested in his services, but at the same time it could be an economic blow for Cantolao, since he is a player with potential for the international market.
Collateral damage
At the beginning of this year, Arón Sánchez played the role of captain of the Peruvian Under 20 National Team during its participation in the South American Championship in Colombia. In that competition, the player trained in Cantolao wore the captain’s ribbon, demonstrating his leadership and importance in the youth team.
Months earlier, in August 2022, he was called up to the U-23 National Team, which at that time was directed by Flavio Maestri and was preparing for a friendly against Chile. His outstanding performances in League 1 led him to be considered by Juan Reynoso weeks later in his first call as coach of the ‘Blanquirroja’. Arón was part of the select list that included players from the local tournament.
After this background, everything would indicate that Sánchez should have been included in the ‘Cabezón’ call-up prior to the start of the 2026 Qualifiers, in which he focused mainly on Under-23 players. However, this did not happen due to the lack of activity of the defender.
