Formula E continues to make progress in its final season under ‘Gen2’ regulations. After the double ePrix in Ad-Diriyah and the race in Mexico City, the championship lands in Europe and more specifically in Italy. The Rome ePrix is one of the most appreciated events by drivers and teams due to the complexity of the layout, since it is one of the few tracks, if not the only one, that in its drawing it brings together fast curves, strong braking, support angles and all watered by high-speed areaswith continuous grade changes.
Rome hosts a Formula E ePrix for the fourth time, although it will be the second event with two races held in the Italian capital. This detail is something to take into account since the track has proven to be one of the most demanding of the entire electric series. The 3.395-kilometre layout is one of many drivers’ favorite circuits. It has 19 curves and a large number of gradient changes that push the mechanics and drivers to the limit. After a very interesting start to the season, the Circuitoi Cittadino dell’Eur promises excitement for Formula E fans.
As a brief review, Formula E arrives in Rome after two ePrix of very different concept and resolution. In Ad-Diriyah the victories went to the single-seaters of Mercedes EQ, since the victory in the first round went to Nyck de Vries, while in the second Edo Mortara prevailed. Conversely, Porsche’s dominance in Mexico was total. Pascal Wehrlein clinched victory for the Stuttgart firm in a display of power rarely seen in Formula E.
And not because of the double won by Porsche thanks to André Lotterer’s second place, but because the brand forced to take an extra turn and leave many of its rivals without energy. In fact, the general classification of Formula E took a real turnaround at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodríguez, even if Edo Mortara managed to retain the lead from him. Nyck de Vries is second with 38 points, five less than Mortara. For its part, Pascal Wehrlein and André Lotterer, Porsche driver duo, are tied on 30 points.
Another rider who has started the season on the right foot is Stoffel Vandoorne, even if the Mercedes driver failed to score points in Mexico. In fact, the Belgian is ahead in the standings of Jean-Eric Vergne, Jake Dennis, Lucas Di Grassi and Robin Frijns, riders who like Stoffel have achieved a podium finish in the first two events of the season. António Félix Da Costa and Sam Bird appear one step behind, riders with the potential to fight for everything, but who have not had the best start to the year.
