Starting this Thursday, March 24, and hours before a new edition of the traditional Banking Convention, news that took the Mexican finance sector by surprise: Alejandro Díaz de León assumes as corporate director of Grupo Bal.
Díaz de León was, until December 2021, Governor of the Bank of Mexico (Banxico).
Díaz de León has extensive experience in the public and private sectors. He is an economist from the Autonomous Technological Institute of Mexico (ITAM), which is also part of the Bal Group companies.
The holding company is also made up of firms recognized as Industrias Peñoles, Palacio de Hierro, National Provincial Group.
Alejandro Baillères, president of Grupo Bal, said that he was “very pleased to receive” Díaz de León as the new addition to the company.

The former governor of the Bank of Mexico will take the position of Jaime Lomelín Guillén, until now corporate director of the Mexican holding company.
The novelty, as was said, occurs a few hours before the start of the 85th edition of the Banking Convention organized by the Banking Association.
Díaz de León had arrived at Banxico in 2017 and, when he left, he said that the issue of inflation was not an issue for his administration, since for him, this must be a constant challenge for everyone who occupies the highest position in the highest monetary authority in the country.
He also challenged the Mexican people to be more resilient.
In an official statement, the holding company says that “the extensive, deep and valuable experience of Alejandro; without a doubt, he is going to contribute to the activities of our beloved Bal Group”.
When he left Banxico in December 2021, Díaz de León gave no clues about his future in the workplace.
In various interviews, he said that he was going to take time for reflection in January 2022 and analyze alternatives without rushing.
Before arriving at Banxico appointed by Enrique Peña Nieto, Díaz de León was in charge of the general direction of the National Bank of Foreign Trade, where he worked until the end of 2016.
Before, from 2011 to 2015, he was head of the Public Credit Unit of the Ministry of Finance.
