Now available in Early Access, Forgive Me Father, a retro FPS that with an accelerated pace similar to Doom presents a very addictive gameplay. And all this in the Lovecraft universe.
Forgive Me Father It is available in Early Access for PC.
In the name of the father and the lovecraftian spirit
Wow another game inspired by the tales and tales of HP Lovecraft, and I don’t mean it in a bad way, but rather surprised. Last month i tried dream cycle (the latest game from one of the creators of tomb Raider) also in early access. And on the other hand, a few weeks ago The Alien Cube a narrative mystery FPS created by a single developer. What is it that draws so much attention from devs to draw or draw inspiration from the world of Cthulhu and its cults? Lovecraft’s work is so vast and so juicy that it has as many tentacles as the same cosmic entity.
Forgive Me Father you have a somewhat arbitrary story or perhaps you still need to connect your dots. we are a father or priest who seeks answers about the atrocities that he is seeing in the world. In the middle of this we begin to realize that everyone has gone crazy and many seem to have mutated into beings out of a nightmare.
The rest of the story is actually being assembled with pieces of fragments that we found but that do not refer so much to our protagonist but to other people who were in the locations we visited.
Returning to the base of Lovecraft, the concepts are, the cults, the nightmares and dreams, the creatures; etc. But I would like all this to have a narrative logic (if that is the point of the game).
On the other hand, if the fort of Forgive Me Father is to see how many guts are detached from an enemy after a shotgun blast, then the next paragraph will convince them.
Holy metal
Early access Forgive Me Father It features 2 phases with six levels each and their respective final bosses. If you ask me, you can see that they spent much more time on the first phase than on the second. The game begins with our protagonist the father who does not know why he came to that place and has to kill everything that crosses his path. Of course they are not simple humans, there are zombies, demons, octopus men with machine guns, sorcerers, swamp beings and psychiatric patients. A very well cared for variety (not only from the aesthetic point of view that we will talk about) but also in the way they attack us.
We have a gun in one hand and divine justice in the other (I digress). In fact, apart from pistols, the father is getting a shotgun, machine gun, a knife and even a harpoon. Nothing to envy the Doom Slayer.
To the typical weapons are added some abilities that we are finding and that have limited use, such as a bible to give us temporary invincibility, a broom to paralyze enemies, a cross to give us life; etc. Knowing when to use these advantages is key when we are attacked from several directions.
In short, despite the fact that enemies that attack from afar can be a challenge, what I lost the most was when I was cornered by several zombies. Although it could have been shot, the bullets can sometimes be scarce and there is no choice but to use the knife.
There is a tree of improvements for both our weapons and skills, these cost points that we get when we level up. The changes are quite a lot like carrying two pistols instead of one or getting more damage with the machine gun or shotgun.
Between so much shooting there are also moments of terror. First, because we have a lamp that to activate it we cannot carry any weapon in our hands, which if someone attacks us in the dark we will go from some light to shooting in the dark. On the other hand, as in old FPS the enemies wait hidden behind a wall or a door without moving until they see us. Obviously in the second pass we know where they come from but the first one took me a couple of surprises.
From dreams to cartoons
Lovecraft’s worlds and stories always emanate that feeling of being in a waking dream. And even though narratively Forgive Me Father he has yet to put the scenarios together to give him some logic; in their individuality they work quite well.
The first phase that is supported by a house or a psychiatric institution makes good use of the work of light and shadow, especially at the level of the rooftops where the streets emanate a haze characteristic of Lovecraft’s stories.
On the other hand, the second phase focuses on a swamp, with more indigenous buildings or huge sanctuaries in the middle of nowhere. In the rainy levels it is a nice aesthetic addition.
The technique chosen by the studio is cel shading (seen in games like XIII, Borderlands or Void bastards). Everything seems to have come out of the vignettes of a comic with a strong support in the dark contours to give shape to objects, enemies and weapons.
The music sometimes does not make a presence but when it does, it is nourished by the new Doom clearly with heavy metal tunes that dovetail quite a bit in our frenzied movements from one side to the other.

conclusion
Personally, I really enjoyed Forgive Me Father, so much so that I had it for breakfast in a few days and I was left hungry. Perhaps its protagonist or his context would have to be better constructed to give him a justification for being inspired by Lovecraft’s work. And some levels of the second phase sin to be “easy” or lack of enemies; if we compare them with those of the first phase.
