Mexico received 18% more international tourists last February than in the same month of 2022, accompanied by an increase of almost 21% in the income of foreign currency for this item, reported this Wednesday the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).
The country entered 3.09 million foreign tourists in the second month of 2023, compared to 2.62 million in the same period of the previous year, according to the report of the autonomous body.
The main annual upturn occurred in tourists by land, which in February 2023 increased by 29.7% to exceed 250,000 people.
While those who arrived by plane increased by 16.5% to more than 1.85 million.
On the other hand, in February 2023, the total expenditure of international tourists it shot up 20.7% year-on-year to $2,416.2 million from a previous figure of $2,002.2 million last year.
Likewise, the average expenditure of each tourist grew by 2.3% to $781.62 in February compared to $763.96 in the second month of 2022.
The data reflects an upward trend in the Tourism in mexicowhich had 38.3 million international tourists during 2022, 20.3% more than in 2021.
Foreign currency income from international visitors in that year was 26,346.9 million dollars, more than 42% than a year before.
He gross domestic product (GDP) tourist of Mexico, which before the health crisis it represented 8.6% of the national economy in 2019, it closed 2021 at 7.1% and it is estimated that in 2022 it did so at 8.3%, according to government projections.
Even so, Mexico was the third most visited country in the world in 2020, a temporary phenomenon that is attributed to flexible sanitary measures in the tourist areas of the country in the midst of covid-19.
Before the pandemic, Mexico was consolidated in 2019 as one of the 10 most visited countries in the world, with more than 45 million international tourists who left 24.563 million dollars, an annual growth of 9%.
