The news broke just a few hours ago: Monica Vitti has died at the age of 90, according to what her husband, Roberto Russo, has made public. The Italian actress, known for her roles in films by great directors of history such as Mario Monicelli, Alberto Sordi or Michelangelo Antonioni, had suffered from Alzheimer’s since 2002.
Vitti has been a female icon who has left her mark in works such as The ragazza with the gun (1968), Hotel room (1981), The demon of jealousy (1970) or heated beds (1979). Additionally, he has worked on movies of the size of That blonde is mine (Stardust) (1973), I know you know I know (1982), flirt (1983) or Francesca is mine (1986).
Monica has been a versatile actress whose career has developed, mainly, between auteur cinema and Italian comedy. In order to honor his legacy, we highlight some of his outfits most mythical of the big screen.
The black dress the note (1961)
Filmed in Milan, this drama is about the relationship between an unmotivated novelist and his frustrated wife. A story full of passion, intrigue and emotions in which we see Vitti wearing (masterfully) a basic garment in any wardrobe: a black dress with spaghetti straps and ruffles.
The white shirt with ruffles L’eclisse (1962)
Once again under Antonioni’s hand, Vitti brings to life Vittoria, a young literary translator whose life is one of intense drama with her partner, Riccardo. One of the pieces that has been etched in our memory has been this white shirt with ruffles, a model with no expiration date that fits like a glove.
The green coat Red Desert (1964)
Red Desert is another of the fictions that appears in Vitti’s filmography. Under Antonioni’s guidance, Monica played Giuliana, a troubled woman living in a northern industrial region after a recent car accident. In this film we observe the Italian with a lovely lightly cut green coat cocoon that could be part of the street style of this season.
The black monkey Modesty Blaise (1966)
Modesty Blaise is one of the international films that Vitti has starred in throughout his professional career. A 1966 British spy comedy directed by Joseph Losey in which we discover a spectacular Monica Vitti with a scowl black skinny jumpsuit and matching boots to represent Modesty.
The fuchsia dress Modesty Blaise (1966)
We have not yet set aside Modesty Blaise. Throughout this film there are several costume changes and one of them led to Vitti wearing this wonderful fuchsia dress. A design that, like the aforementioned green coat, could be part of the current collection of firms such as Zara or Mango.
