“File 81”, the series of Netflix premiered in January 2022, it was canceled after having only one season. The news surprised fans around the world, since the show – which left an open ending in its last episode – had good metrics within the platform. Netflix did not give any explanation as to why it was cancelled.
file 81 is an 8-episode horror series, developed by Rebecca Sonnenshine (The Boys, The Vampire Diaries) and produced by the well-known director James Wan (The spell). He followed the story Dan Turner, a young man who lost his family in a fire and who has a fondness for videotapes. One day, He is contacted by a mysterious company that offers him a lot of money in exchange for restoring some tapes found in the remains of a fire that occurred in the Visser building.. But, there is a strange condition: Dan must do this task confined to a mysterious base in the middle of the forest.
As the story unfolds, Dan will meet through the tapes Melody Pendras, a young filmmaker who entered the viser to “make a documentary about its inhabitants” as an excuse to look for his mother. She is the one who is filming the tapes that Dan you will need to restore. The rest of the series jumps between the past and the present, from the perspective of Dan and the perspective of Melody, to try to reveal what strange thing is hidden in the Visser.
The series has Lovecraftian cosmic horror components, as well as some mystery and suspense scenes.
And what if I want to know how File 81 ends?
What many people ignore is file 81 is not originally a series, but a podcast. Daniel Powell and Marc Sollinger are the creators of this story, which actually has 3 seasons from 2016 to 2018.
Although the original story is a little different from what it tells us Netflix, the premise is exactly the same: Dan -who has a traumatic past- must restore the tapes he recorded Melody in the building Visser. There are some details changed for a better visual approach, for example that the tapes that Dan must restore they are not videos, they are cassettes. The biggest difference between the two stories is that Melody and Dan they do not share the bond they have in the series.
But…the story of Dan and Melody it is not the only one that is hidden in the original Podcast. Finally, we will learn that the focus of each episode is another resident of the Visser.
