The FIFA Disciplinary Committee “decided that that match be played again on a date and place to be determined by FIFA”he indicated in a statement.
The governing body of world football also decreed economic sanctions for the Brazilian Federation and for the Argentine Federation, as well as a two-game suspension for Argentine players Emiliano Buendía, Emiliano Martínez, Giovanni Lo Celso and Cristian Romero.
The match, initially scheduled for September 5 in Sao Paulo was interrupted after only five minutes of play due to the intervention of the Brazilian health authoritiesafter four Argentine soccer players were accused of breaching the anticovid protocol.
Representatives from the Anvisa health agency and the federal police entered the field of play to end the game, amid widespread confusion.
The break in that match did not prevent Neymar’s Brazil and Leo Messi’s Argentina from sealing their ticket for the 2022 Qatar World Cup (November 21-December 18), without having to wait for the Disciplinary Commission’s decision.
Thus, the dispute of that match will have hardly anything at stake from the qualifying point of view.
The FIFA Disciplinary Committee, based on “several breaches” by the two affected federations, imposed a fine of 55,000 Swiss francs (525,000 euros/593,000 dollars) on Brazil and 250,000 Swiss francs (238 thousand euros/270 thousand dollars) to Argentina.
The four affected players, Giovanni Lo Celso (then at Tottenham, now at Villarreal), Emiliano Martínez (Aston Villa), Emiliano Buendía (Aston Villa) and Cristian Romero (Tottenham), were suspended for two matches.
