The surprise of the year is that smartphone sales fell in the second quarter of the year. We tell you everything in this note!
In a new study by Canalys it was revealed that global smartphone shipments fell by 9% in the second quarter of the year compared to the first quarter. The reason for this drop would be due to the economic downturn and unpredictability.
If we talk with numbers, in the first quarter of 2022 were shipped (i.e. ordered from factories) 300 million smartphones. However, in this second quarter only 270 million cell phoneswhat is a 9% less than the previous quarter. It must be considered that the 300 million of smartphones included major launches such as the Galaxy S22 and the OnePlus 10 Pro.
In the report, the research analyst at Canalys, Runar Bjorhovdehints that vendors were forced to rethink their strategies as the outlook for the smartphone industry turned more cautious in this second quarter.
This was not the only thing the analyst commented on, as he explained that “Economic headwinds, sluggish demand and inventory buildup caused vendors to quickly re-evaluate their portfolio strategies for the remainder of 2022”. With the advent of better-than-older models, many people decide to buy newer devices, leaving older versions sitting in vendor depots. And this is a great loss for them.
But the report explains that component availability and cost constraints are improving. However, there are logistical and production-related difficulties that have not yet been overcome. Among these difficulties are the import restrictions of emerging countries. These restrictions, for example, caused further delays in customs processes.
Alternatively, vendors have to work closely with distributors to check supply and inventory status. This is for “quickly spot short-term opportunities while maintaining healthy long-term channel partnerships.” But another reason global shipments are down is inflation.
In the report, it is revealed that even though shipments decreased, many devices from big brands such as Samsung They managed to consecrate themselves as the biggest sellers. This is thanks to the company’s focus on the cheapest series, the Galaxy A. This line of devices brought Samsung a twenty-one% of sales in this second quarter of the year.
After Samsungcomes Manzana with sales of 17%being the most demanded device the iPhone 13. On the other hand, companies like Xiaomi, OPPO and Vivo they competed against each other in their home country. Companies noted double-digit declines with market shares of 14%, 10% and 9% respectively. Something interesting is that Samsung remains the supplier with the most shipments abroad. In the first trimester, he achieved 73.6 million of shipments while Manzana, who also came in second place, managed 56 million shipments.
