According to Statista, In 2019, there were 8.89 million deaths from ischemic heart disease.
During 2019 there were 161.5 deaths per 100 thousand inhabitants due to heart attacks in the United States.
In the 1950s, almost 700 men died for every 100,000 people in the United States.
With the help of artificial intelligence in an eye exam, it is possible to predict future risks of fatal heart attacks thanks to a group of British scientists. The test could lead to a screening program, allowing doctors to prescribe medications and lifestyle changes decades before symptoms of heart disease emerge.
How did they get these results?
The group of scientists developed an algorithm called QUARTZ (a quantitative analysis of the topology and size of retinal vessels), to predict a person’s cardiovascular health and death from retinal images.
The researchers commented in a press release that, “AI-enabled vasculometry risk prediction is fully automated, low-cost, non-invasive, and has the potential to reach a larger proportion of the population in the community due to ‘high street’ availability and because blood sampling or (blood pressure measurement) are not necessary.”
The study authors added that eye screening is likely to help prolong disease-free status in older adults with increasing morbidities and help minimize health care costs related to heart disease, such as heart attacks.
According to the study results, 64,144 UK Biobank (UKB) participants with 327 circulatory deaths and 5,862 European Prospective Investigation into Cancer (EPIC-Norfolk) participants with 201 circulatory deaths were included.
