The Metaverse is a collective virtual universe that, in theory, is very similar to the universe we know. Like outer space, it is made up of systems with stars (core networks) and planets (underlying projects).
These core networks, or stars, are the different Blockchains that exist. The underlying projects are, as the name implies, the projects that are developed within each network.
There are an infinity of networks, or blockchain.
The most famous is the Bitcoin network, followed by Ethereum, Solana, Cardano, Vulcan Forged, Harmony, OEC, Ronin, Klaytn, Everscale, Heco, among many others.
Together, these networks make up the Metaverse and each of them has its own characteristics, functions and projects.
For example, the Ethereum network is an open source platform (meaning that its software is based on the open collaboration of its community); it is used to execute smart contracts; it is programmable, which allows anyone to create applications on its blockchain; and, unlike other networks, it has a high degree of decentralization.
Bitcoin, for its part, is a peer-to-peer payment network that operates with a cryptographic protocol; it is highly decentralized, but it is not programmable, so it is very difficult to develop applications on its network.
Ronin, instead, is a sidenet linked to Ethereum. It is made specifically for Sky Mavis, the developer of Axie Infinity, one of the main games in the Metaverse. Only the products of this company are developed in it, such as its marketplace, its wallet, its exchange to exchange cryptocurrencies and other games that they are developing.
Currently, these networks, or systems, are separate from each other. In the future, there will be connections that will allow users to transport their digital assets through the different networks of the Metaverse. This movement (between networks) will be completely imperceptible to the user. Very similar to how, today, we go from one server to another, within web 2.0.
It is a great idea to know the different characteristics of each network. To do so, you can simply search for them on Google. To get a better result you can add the word “Blockchain”, after the name of the network.
Next week I will talk about the different types of underlying projects that you can find in the different blockchains. If you want to get a little ahead of yourself and start learning about them, I invite you to use dappradar.com, a list of all the planets, or underlying projects, in the Metaverse.
