The latest from Dragon Ball
The first thing you need to know before watching SUPER HERO is where the Dragon Ball franchise ended. The last entry, outside of the manga, was Dragon Ball Super: Broly, the first movie under the mantle of the Dragon Ball Super saga. The movie rebooted the non-canon Broly in a now-canon place in the franchise, showing the ultra-powerful Saiyan being banished from planet Vegeta and eventually being recruited by Frieza to exact revenge on Goku and Vegeta.
Although you don’t need to know everything that happened in Broly, you should know that the titular Saiyan was left alive on a remote planet after his fight with Gogeta and will appear in SUPER HERO. Leading up to the events of Broly, there are a few things to keep in mind from Dragon Ball Super to the events of SUPER HERO. In Super, we saw Gohan and Videl have his daughter Pan, we saw Gohan regain his former strength, and we saw the bond between Piccolo and Gohan’s family strengthen.
It’s also worth knowing that SUPER HERO takes place between the end of Broly and the Peaceful World Saga of Dragon Ball Z, which sees Goku and his friends many years later. As such, Gohan is older, Pan is older, and Goten and Trunks are now teenagers.
Past and future
Going further back in the Dragon Ball timeline, you will want to know about the history of the Red Patrol Army before watching SUPER HERO. Originally formed to gather the Dragon Balls to fulfill the wish of their leader, Commander Red, the Red Patrol Army was defeated by Goku, who shot down dozens of soldiers and several androids created by the Army.
However, this defeat was not permanent, as Dr. Gero (a scientist in the Red Ribbon Army) plotted revenge, created androids and became an android to one day destroy Goku. He also went so far as to create a bio-droid known as Cell, which was created from the cells of the greatest warriors on earth, aside from Frieza!
Of course, Goku and Gohan finally managed to defeat these powerful mad scientist monsters. Speaking of Gohan, Dragon Ball Super: SUPER HERO focuses on the relationship between him and his first teacher, Piccolo. Before watching the movie, it’s best not to forget the bond these two share, which began when Piccolo took Gohan to the desert to train him for the coming Saiyans.
Though reluctant at first, the two eventually grew close, with Piccolo later sacrificing himself for his student. This bond only grew stronger over the years and extended to Gohan’s daughter Pan, who also has a major role in SUPER HERO. Gohan’s respect for Piccolo as his first teacher runs deep, leading him to wear clothing similar to his teacher’s in the Cell Saga and again in SUPER HERO.
Gohan’s Potential
From the characters’ first appearances as children, it was clear that Gohan – a human/Saiyan hybrid – brimmed with warrior potential: he was able to stun Raditz with his rage, he quickly learned to survive alone in the wild, he fought alongside Krillin on Namek, He was the first to become Super Saiyan 2 and his final form showed that his power was equal to – if not greater than – that of Majin Buu.
Gohan’s potential has been a central theme in the Dragon Ball franchise and SUPER HERO seems to be taking this thread to new places. Although he lost her fighting prowess early in Dragon Ball Super, he eventually regained it in time for the Tournament of Power, and seemed to keep up with the training leading up to Super. Simply put, Gohan’s potential has always been great and Dragon Ball keeps finding new ways to explore it.
