The European Union tightens the fence around manufacturers. The future Euro 7, possibly the last standard for polluting emissions, has delayed its entry into force with no date on the horizon. But, the end of the year looms and the brands tremble. The new Euro 6e standard arrives with new requirements to meet.
Portable emissions devices have become common among car brands. Its engineers, and those of specialized external companies, roll by means of Europe with new cars equipped with this system in the rear testing adjustments to the engines to meet the new requirements that will be released in the new emissions standard Euro 6e.
Although until now it was thought that Euro 7 would be implemented in the middle of the decade following Euro 6d, in reality the new regulation is stalled and it is unknown when it will actually be voted on. In fact, its entry into force was scheduled for 2026 and now it is aimed at 2027although nothing is confirmed. Given the situation, the European Union has come up with an intermediate regulation, the aforementioned Euro 6e, which comes into force from first day of next 2023as the German colleagues of «Heise».
The new Euro 6e emission standard anticipates the harsh Euro 7
The keys to Euro 7 focus on the CO and NOx emissionsand in the mass of the volatile particles that do not burn completely during combustion, further reducing their limit values and that will have to be met in laboratory tests, while in the real driving test – known as RDE – it has been established a limit in mg/km for a distance of 16 km.
Well, the new Euro 6e standard will be much more restrictive with the gasoline and diesel engines, and especially on cold starts. Manufacturers will have to find a way to make SCR catalysts heat up more quickly. In models equipped with a 48 Volt system, there will be no big problem, but this technology will necessarily be mandatory as well larger gauge filters, especially in compact and utility. Another of the great novelties is that the Conformity Factor of 1.43 that could be exceeded in laboratory tests has been replaced by an error tolerance in the PEMS portable measurement system, so that for NOX it has been lowered to 1.1 and for the particles at 1.5.
The emission limits are further reduced, although they do not reach the level that will be produced with the future Euro 7 standard, but it does mean one thing: and it is that the price of all cars will increase again, especially in the smaller models on the market, as these are the ones that need extra technology to comply with the new standards, an electric heater for SCR catalytic converters. components that are not cheap at all.
