The game announcements keep coming, but few would have expected that one of the most interesting surprises would be a new Arkanoid game. Arkanoid is a 1986 arcade game in which players break different arrangements of blocks with bouncing balls using their paddle and power-ups. Now Arkanoid returns with a new installment for PC and consoles in 2022.
Arkanoid: Eternal Battle will mix retro Arkanoid gameplay with modern multiplayer, including a battle royale mode. The Arkanoid: Eternal Battle announcement trailer was released during Guerrilla Collective’s Saturday keynote and focused on the four different game modes included in the game.
The most exciting of the game modes is, as the game’s title suggests, Eternal Battle. This is a 25-player battle royale mode, similar to other retro battle games like Tetris 99. 25 players will compete to quickly complete Arkanoid stages while punishing their opponents, and the last player standing will become the victor. .
The multiplayer of Arkanoid: Eternal Battle it’s not limited to Battle Eternal, of course. Players will be able to test their competitive ability to break blocks in Arkanoid: Eternal Battle. Versus mode will allow two to four players to battle it out, but with a catch. Unlike Eternal Battle, which is online, Versus mode will only be available locally through split-screen multiplayer.
In addition to the two multiplayer modes, there will be two single player modes. Retro mode will deliver a classic Arkanoid experience with all the content from the original game, straight out of an 80’s arcade.
Neo mode will offer a modernized version of Arkanoid with brand new content that builds on the strongest elements of the series. And while both modes are played offline, they will also feature online leaderboards so players can compare their scores with friends and rivals.
Arkanoid: Eternal Battle arrives in October on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch and Xbox Series X|S.
