Two out of three companies in Chile have detected malicious code on their servers. While one in four organizations recognize incidents of vulnerability in their equipment. Do you mean that the rest went unnoticed by hackers? No, they probably also housed some malware at one time, but they just haven’t been able to catch it.
These alarming figures were presented by the team of ESET Computer Security for Latin America, during the 7th Forum that the company organizes to show the landscape of digital threats in the region.
They recognize that Chile is one of the countries that has invested the most money, in terms of State and private organizations, in computer security. But they warn of a flaw that can help reduce malware incidents in the country.
Fayerwayer had an interesting talk with mario micuccicomputer security researcher ESET for Latin America. The team of this organization that is in charge of providing security software prepared a whole report full of figures in which Chile appears on the radar of events related to malicious codes.
It is not something exclusive to the southern territory. It would be strange if the name of this country did not appear in the statistics. In the first place, as it happens in many nations of the region, the main way that cybercriminal organizations use to compromise servers of personal users, government and private companies, is the phishing.
Situation for which Mario Micucci points out that “Chile is one of the most developed countries in cybersecurity in the region“, but “against an ill-prepared user there is no security system worth. People need to be made aware”, pointed out the researcher in Computer Security.
An information campaign has been launched in the country so that people do not fall for Internet scams that arrive through SMS, emails, social networks and even video game chats. You should never enter doubtful URL’s and try not to fall for misleading offers.
And for Mario Micucci, because Chile has a good infrastructure in cybersecurity matters, the campaigns must be reinforced.
Chile: country with the least exploit detection
In Latin America, Chile is one of the countries with the lowest detection of exploits. Most, according to charts Fayerwayer had access to, were integrated via phishing.
Businesses (government and private) and personal users must be better prepared to continue reducing this figure. To give us an example, in Mexico around 25% of the exploit detections in Latin America were reported and in Chile only 4 percent were reported.
The statistics that ESET LA manages of phishing campaigns so far in 2022 counts approximately 600 thousand deceptive messages to violate the computer security of servers (PCs, mobiles or tablets).
Likewise, you recommend that it is necessary to run the updates that the operating systems offer. It sounds crazy, but the most used exploit in Chile is from 2012.
Linux, Google Chrome, Android, Mac OSX and Firefox are among the most vulnerable OS and apps in Chile.
