The romanticization of entrepreneurship is more normal than is thought: “when you do what you love, it is not an effort, nor work”.
The reality is that no, entrepreneurs face adverse conditions and greater resilience.
Only 10 percent of entrepreneurs are happy, since there is stress and frustration involved.
In Mexico, entrepreneurs are considered a key to the development of the economy. According to BBVA, the “backbone” of the country’s economic development is found in micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which are responsible for 72 percent of jobs. Although thousands of Mexicans bet on entrepreneurship, it does not mean that their businesses prosper, much less that they have less work and above all that they are happy: the romanticization of doing what you are passionate about creates very high expectations that can lead to disappointment .
In 2020, the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) estimated that 1.2 million SMEs were born; however, due to the pandemic, they closed 1.6 millionof which 24 percent were non-financial services with 24.92 percent, followed by commerce with 18.98 percent and manufacturing with 15 percent.
For 2021, the situation changed, since there was a increase in the birth of enterprises, where each month 0.81 percent establishments were created, a growth of 10 percentage points compared to 2020.
Currently, 99.8 percent of establishments in the country are SMEs and Inegi ensures that there are more than 4 million SMEs in the country, which contribute about 52 percent of the annual Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
The pandemic was a big blow for entrepreneurs, since from April to June 2020, they saw their income decrease to 73.7 percent, well above the large companies with 11.9 percent.
Faced with the reduction in income, many entrepreneurs had to be resilient, adopt digitization measures and internet sales. The Inegi estimates that 46.1 percent of Mexican SMEs adopted eCommerce as an operational measure against Covid.
Entrepreneurs are not happy, they have to make a double effort: romanticization leads to unhappiness
Despite the fact that for the economy, entrepreneurs are an economic boost in the face of informality and unemployment, the task of creating a business is not at all easy.
Many people think that when you do a job that you are passionate about, happiness is guaranteed; however, reality is not like that.
For example, in the midst of a global crisis, many SMEs were left stagnant and did not have the same revenue declines, nor did they have the necessary resources to transition to digitization easily.
According to Happy, of the entrepreneurs, only 10 percent are happy, as they face stress or frustration due to long working hours and uncertainty.
Entrepreneurship is not an activity that brings happiness in the short termyou have to be a resident, learn about the real scenario that is an ups and downs of emotions and not overwork yourself.
