Few series reach the level of success that Akira Toriyama’s iconic Dragon Ball franchise has achieved. Dragon Ball has been at the top of the shonen genre since its debut in the 1980s, but it has managed to remain an enduring series for so long thanks to the careful shaping of its storytelling and characters.
Many fans consider that the evolution of the franchise towards the action version of Dragon Ball Z It is the moment in which the series reached its maximum splendor. Dragon Ball Z is full of undeniable achievements, especially when it comes to the villains it brings into the fight. There are some absolutely evil figures that terrorize the heroes in Dragon Ball Z, but some of these threats have more appeal as heroes than enemies.
Raditz
Dragon Ball Z has introduced many strong and amazing villains, but they all date back to Raditz, the first real antagonist. This destroys Goku’s reality forever upon discovering that he is a member of an alien warrior race known as the Saiyans, as well as contributing to Goku’s first death.
The resurrection of the characters and the return of the defeated villains becomes quite common in Dragon Ball, but this approach has not yet been put into practice with Raditz. The villain’s time is short as a result, but there’s plenty of material to use with Goku working with his former evil brother.
android 16
Cell’s awakening is preceded by the recognition of multiple Androids, all of them with the power to destroy the world. Androids 17 and 18 become the most important of these creations, but the android 16 it also has an important purpose that is often overlooked.
Android 16 is touched by the beauty of the planet and is much more pacifist than his counterparts. Android 16 and Gohan are able to form a touching bond before Cell maliciously destroys him. Android 16 is clearly on the path to redemption, and it’s tragic that he doesn’t get a long tenure as a hero.
Ginyu Special Forces
Dragon Ball Z puts Earth’s heroes up against all manner of seismic threats upon their arrival on planet Namek. Frieza is ultimately the main antagonist to defeat, but he keeps the heroes busy for a long period of time with his trusty mercenaries, the Ginyu Special Forces. These five fighters possess unique abilities, and are known throughout the galaxy, despite their rare interest in showmanship.
The death of the Ginyu Task Force makes for some strong moments for Vegeta, but it’s frustrating that a group of figures like them disappear so quickly. The return of the Ginyu Special Forces on the planet of North Kai speaks of their courage and versatility. They wouldn’t have to be a permanent presence in Dragon Ball Z, but rather helpful heroes who step in from time to time.
