Elon Musk will donate $1 billion to Wikipedia, but on one condition: change the name of the page to Dickipedia (or Penepedia, following the play on words in English with Dick – Pene). It is the tycoon’s latest practical joke against the website.
The offer was made this weekend through his X account, formerly Twitter.
It all arises because Jimmy Wales, founder of Wikipedia, published a statement saying that the site is not for sale, but requests contributions of 2 euros for The Wikimedia Foundation “for knowledge”.
“This Thursday, September 28, we ask for your support. If Wikipedia has given you the equivalent of 2 euros of knowledge, please join the 2% that have donated. All we ask for is 2 euros if you can afford 2 euros, or 25 euros if you can afford 25 euros.”
Elon Musk took part in the statement and posted a falling asleep emoji. He then offered $2 billion if they changed the name to Dickipedia (Penepedia).
When a user said that Wikipedia should accept, keep the money and then revert to its original name, Elon Musk stated that It has to be with the name for a full year.
As Yahoo! News, Elon Musk has constantly hinted that Wikipedia has a leftist bias, comparing it with media outlets such as The Washington Post, The New York Times and CNN, among others.
Furthermore, he criticizes the constants requests for monetary donations to the public from the foundation.
“For what is the money?”, Elon Musk asked himself. “Inquiring minds want to know.”
Wikipedia was launched on January 15, 2001 as an open-edition project of an online encyclopedia. It can be considered a version of paper encyclopedias.
For Jimmy Wales, Wikipedia’s mission is to “imagine a world in which every person on the planet “has free access to the sum of all human knowledge.”
Currently, and always on the rise, It has more than 61 million articles in 333 languages.
