The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) recognized El Fuerte, Magical Town of Sinaloa, as one of the most beautiful rural destinations in the world along with 32 towns from 18 countries on five continents.
With the “Best Tourism Villages by UNWTO” award, villages that constitute a notable example of a rural tourist destination are recognized. These towns have accredited cultural and natural assets, preserve and promote rural and community values, products and lifestyles. In all the winners there is a commitment to innovation and sustainability in economic, social and environmental terms.
Located to the northeast of Sinaloa, El Fuerte has great natural, historical, architectural, cultural attractions and deep-rooted indigenous traditions (yoremes).
This colonial city is considered the most beautiful in Sinaloa. El Fuerte, which was founded in 1564, is one of the two cities in Mexico recognized this year with said award, along with Creel, Pueblo Mágico de Chihuahua.

In the 2022 edition, 136 towns participated, but only 32 of them obtained recognition. Each of the 57 UNWTO member states could submit up to three towns. The awards ceremony will take place in Al-Ula (Saudi Arabia) on February 27 and 28, 2023.

The Main Square It has a kiosk of beautiful blacksmithing from more than a hundred years ago. On one side is the Temple of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, also called San Juan de Carapoa. Before it was an 18th century Jesuit mission; It has a beautiful pink stone façade and an imposing spire tower and its bell tower.
It is a replica of the fortress built by the Spanish to protect themselves from the attacks of the natives, during the 17th century. Inside you will find pieces made by the Yoremes, multiple photographs that show how they live, old pieces, cannons and a hearse.
The strong river It measures approximately 290 kilometers and is formed by the confluence of the Verde and Urique rivers. You can navigate it on a raft to enjoy the surroundings, including the flora (low deciduous forest) and fauna such as rabbits, pigeons, raccoons, white-tailed deer, ducks, among others.
