When an athlete represents a country during the Olympic Games, it is something that not only fills with pride, but also with emotion, since it shows everyone the talent and discipline that exists in the place from which they originate.
Despite the difficulties that exist to practice some sports in Mexico, this boy shows us that nothing is impossible, because 30 years after the last appearance of a Mexican in figure skating, the young athlete not only made his debut, but who also won her ticket to the figure skating final in Beijing 2022.
Originally from Zapopan, Jalisco, Donovan Carrillo is a 22-year-old Mexican skater who made his debut on February 7 at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, becoming the only Latin American skater in the competition in the short program.
Donovan performed his routine in the short program to the tune Black Magic Womanby guitarist Carlos Santana, in which he showed Quad Toeloop, Triple Axel, Triple Lutz and Triple Toeloop jumps, which led him to achieve a score of 79.69 and positioned him in nineteenth place, advancing to the final for the free program.
Nathan Chen of the United States, Yuma Kagiyama and Shoma Uno of Japan took the top three positions in the short program.
However, Donovan, who has been practicing figure skating with great discipline for ten years, became the first Mexican to reach the figure skating final at the Winter Olympics.
Kisses for my family and for all of Mexico, dreams come true.
The outfit that the Mexican athlete wore in his debut was made by Guadalajara designer Edgar Lozano and has around 18,000 crystals and gold studs distributed on the legs, forearms, shoulders and chest.
Donovan’s suit design was made in 10 days, with a black base, adorned with black and gold chromed gold crystals. In addition, the suit has an estimated value of almost 60,000 pesos, which, according to experts, exceeds the cost of an Olympic Games gold medal, since the gold medals awarded at Tokyo 2020 did not exceed 16,000 Mexican pesos.
We applaud the dream debut of @DonovanDCarr in the #Olympic Games of winter #Beijing2022, in which he scored 79.69 in the short program. 👏

For his presentation on the long program, Donovan seeks to incorporate songs into his routine. Perhaps, perhaps, perhaps by Daniel Boaventura and Carlos Rivera, sway by Dean Martin and Marya Ricky Martin hit in 1995.
I am very motivated to give my best in the free skate. One of the goals was to seek this classification.
Donovan Carrillo became the fourth Mexican skater to compete in the Olympic Games, after the participation of Diana Evans in Calgary 1988, followed by Ricardo Olavarrieta in Calgary 1988 and Mayda Navarro in Albertville 1992.
The Mexican athlete has managed to win everyone’s hearts with his charisma, talent, perseverance and, above all, his way of showing Mexican culture through music and his costumes in competition. Congratulations Donovan!
