The name of Don Pettit probably won’t mean that much to fans of the history of space exploration of the POT as it happens with Neil Armstrong.
But the reality is that we are before one of the astronauts with the greatest legacy, weight, relevance and transcendence in the entire history of the space agency.
For starters, Don Pettit is currently the oldest active astronaut at NASA at 67, and also has the distinction of being one of the cosmonauts who has spent the longest time up in the sky. International Space Station (ISS).
Pettit, as you may well suspect, between each project and job up there in space had a lot of free time and few leisure options compared to what our planet offers after a day’s work.
So being in this place, visually spectacular and inconceivable in many ways, he decided to resume and nurture his second greatest passion: photography.
Thanks to this, we now have a beastly series of portraits of the Earth and space of the ISS, all authored by Don Pettit, and today we review his most endearing ones.
For years Don Pettit has had an official account on the Twitter social network. His pattern of publications and topics of interest is diverse and not exactly constant.
But recently the nearly 70-year-old astronaut has taken to this account as a way to spread some of his favorite photos taken up there in space.
local media and different latitudes of the world have taken this flow of images as a basis and inspiration to select their favorites and here we share some of our favorites as well.
A portrait with almost psychedelic overtones, achieved using the prolonged exposure or long exposure technique.
This is our favorite image of all of Pettit’s work, so much so that a decade ago here at FayerWayer We already dedicate an entire article to it.
The Iberian Peninsula as we have never seen it. This photo dates from the year 2012 and there we can appreciate the curvature of the Earth and what this area of the continent looks like from above.
The photo was also taken in 2012 and here we can see the spectacular folds of the water formations and their contact with the earth. The mangroves off the coast of India are impressive.
Taking advantage of the long exposure technique it is possible to capture the brightness of the atmospheric air with these unique pastel green tones. Achieving with her another impressive portrait that ends our selection.
